Why Does My Child Not Like Reading?

Updated: May 25, 2020

For parents who have children that don't care for reading ,this is a real concern. We all know how beneficial reading is on so many levels when it comes to their development. So how do we get them excited about reading...

I remember reading a quote that said that it's not that your child doesn't like reading, but rather that they just haven't found the perfect book. Your child may have started a few books that were either too difficult, to long and maybe just boring. Unfortunately this could have been the horrible introduction they got to reading, and that will stick. I always start with their interests and likes. Do they like ballet, soccer, bugs, crafts... Then I move onto themes. Adventure, mystery, real-life, humor, fantasy etc. Try and join the dots for your child without forcing your expectations onto them. Start with an easy book that maybe your child could read to a younger sibling but has all the elements that she or he will like. It could be a funny book about a puppy getting lost in a big city and ends up on an exciting adventure through a swamp. I think what I am trying to say, is load the hook with yummy bait to encourage your child to love reading. Once they are hooked on a type of book they really like, they will be hooked for life.
